♥ Johor Trip with my girls ♥

After planning a Malaysia trip with my poly classmates for about a year; and after having many cancelled trips... We finally had our first success JB trip!!

We didn't really plan our itinerary for that day but our motto of the day was definitely to eat and to eat and to continue eating.

Our first stop was at HuaMui Restoran, which was located slightly behind City Square Mall (about 10 mins walk or you can just cab to Jalan Trus)

If you click on the link of the restaurant above, it actually leads to its good reviews. I'm surprised that people actually gave 4.5 stars for the restaurant. In my opinion, it should probably deserve only 3 stars for its service and food..

Hua Mui Coffee Shop 华美茶餐室 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)
No 131, Jalan Trus

80000 Johor Bahru
Tel: 07 224 7364

Ordered Kampong Fried Rice, Signature Chicken Chop, Butter Chicken and Fried Kuey Teow.
The Kampong Fried Rice tasted quite okay but I would definitely prefer any other hawker anytime anyday.
As for the chicken chop, the chicken and potato was quite tasty but the oil in the chicken came drizzling out.... A bit scary uh :b
The sauce was just average I would say!

Going on to the butter chicken, it gave us all a tiny shock when it arrived at our table because of its super unappealing appearance. It was very lightly coloured brown that it looked uncooked and served straight from the freezer.

Yup, it looks worse than how it looks in the photo because the photo above had auto white balance settings which caused it to be redly tin

However, we judged too quickly and it actually was the best dish of the whole table.

Didn't really like the Kuey Teow because it had not much taste in it.

This shop was our first stop and we didn't finish the food even though we only ordered 4 mains for 6 people.

After eating, we went further down the street as there was this famous store for selling banana cakes(WOOHOO!!!!

By the time we reached, the cakes were already sold out and we had to queue about 10 mins for the next batch to be done! And by the time the new cakes were out, there was already a long queue for it!

Bought 10 pieces and I think I ate about 4 pieces out of the whole box.. Sinful much but once you start, you can't stop. Sobs at all the calories I've taken in.

Walked further down and we saw this Cafe "Bev C" and entered! This cafe also has a rating of 4.5 and I think it really deserved the 4.5.

Did not quite get the picture above as first as I could not read the sign at all and was trying hard to figure out what the name of the cafe was. It was only when one of the girls mentioned that the name was on the shadow then I realised. What a cool design omg!

The atmosphere was also good and price was affordable.

Even their plain water looked good omg :b

We ordered 3 pies to share among us and went to take some photos while waiting for the food to be ready!
Do I look studious now?
ok Jokes aside I wish I am

While we were taking our photos, the power tripped.. :(
Hence, the lighting was the natural light coming in from the window!

But it was okay because the restaurant was well ventilated and bright so the trip didn't really affect us.

When the power went back on, we headed back to our seats and took photos of the cake..

Here's the fun part again!- the second power trip.

However, it was to our advantage because we wanted to celebrate Peishan's birthday!

So, when the background music stopped, I was like "There's no more music, I think we should make our own" and we started singing Happy birthday for her!

Really hope that she was truly surprised by us hehe ♥♥

I think we were seen as a nuisance for singing so loudly in a cafe but bear with us pls :x birthdays only come by once a year :p

They had sketchbooks in the cafe which contained VERY, I must emphasise, very nice drawings. I didn't wanna destroy it due to my lack of artistic talents hence I just posed with the sketchbook only.

♥ Group photo ♥
Good Lighting:)

The cafe has two storeys opened up for customers and the first storey actually is a boutique which sells their collection of apparels! They had a big mirror so......
Proudly featuring our banana cakes!
Afterwards, we cabbed to KSL for some shopping and more food!
Blackball
Heh, even though blackball could be found in Singapore, we were still looking forward to it due to the advantage of the high exchange rate!
Also, we tried out their durian dessert which is not in Singapore's menu currently! Really hope they bring it in though!

Still must mention that blackball in one of my favourite dessert list :DD

At about 6pm, we headed back to the customs area for the street food(laoniang's recommendation :p)

That was a truly erm.. unexpected experience.

Never in my life have I been chased away from my table while eating halfway!!?!1!!

So the story goes like this; we ordered stingray from this shop and while waiting for it to come, we found seats nearby (about 2 tables away) and sat there.

The seats were right in front of a Kuey Teow stall.

So while waiting for our food, Chinyee and I went to order more food from other stalls.

We ordered chee cheong fan(which tasted awesome) and fried kuey teow.. The fried kuey teow had a long queue so we brought back the Chee cheong fan first!

Note: we were still sitting there peacefully.

After we finished our chee cheong fan, Chinyee and I went back to the kuey teow stall to collect our food..
When we headed back to our seats, one fierce looking auntie came over and started chasing us away and scolded us like some 泼妇.

We had no idea why.

Then we realized.

We bought kuey teow from competitor's stall and sat right in front of another kuey teow stall.

BUT HELLO?

We didn't even realise that that stall was selling kuey teow until she shouted at us LOL.

So, we were forced to move our chee chong fan, chicken and kuey teow to another table lololol.

我可怜的美食

And there she was; having 2 empty tables in front of her for the rest of the night because nobody realised she was selling kuey teow anyway. Or maybe her food just wasn't nice enough to attract returning customers.

STILL; I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a sore bitch about the tables but, if she let us sit at those tables,  people who walk past will actually think that the food are from her and be tempted to buy right?

So, we were sort of like 'promoting' for her even though we used competitor's food larh. But need to like that annort? >:(

But ohwell; hope she enjoyed the company of her two empty tables that evening.

Then our stingray came.. which was a bit of a mood lifter because all of us were in the dumps already.

Not an appealing photo but the lighting was so bad so...

Overall, I had a great day even though the last part was really a mood destroyer but I guess it did not affect our whole experience too badly! What matters most was that we went through all this together and already had our fair share of fun!

Can't wait for the next overseas(if possible) trip with my classmates again heh!

But sadly, the holidays are ending sobs.

Posted about my trip to Punggol Lalang Fields at the start of the holidays stating my holiday goals and its time to review them since there's only a day of holiday left.

Time To Grill!

Friends who know me should know that I'm a big fan of mookata! For those of you who had not heard of it before, it's a Thai-style barbecue steamboat that is on the rise now!

Let me introduce you to Time To Grill, a Thai style stall having a wide variety of selection of ingredients for mookata!

Located at 431 Clementi, it is within walking distance from Clementi MRT.

Other than mookata, Time to Grill have also explored other areas of Thai cuisine!
Glad to be able to try out their dishes when Vivian and I headed over for tasting!
Tang Hoon Salad
A delightful combination of glass vermicelli with juicy chunks of prawns, crabstick and many more ingredients!
I found this to be a very interesting dish as the taste is rather refreshing due to the sourness from the lime juice inside! I especially liked the tenderness of the squid as it was cooked nicely!

Rating: 3.8/5

Seafood Tom Yam Soup

Hot and Spicy- a must order when you're at Time to Grill!

I don't usually drink soups as I don't like drinks that has temperature higher than room temperature. But this soup was worth me going against my "value" as its rich in the taste and every spoonful will just make you crave for more!

Its very hard to get tom yam soups right but I must really commend on this one:)

Rating: 4.6/5
Thai Basil Pork
A good choice if you're looking out for a weekday lunch! Proteins, fibre and carbs all covered!

 Rating: 4/5
Pork Cake
A food item similar to fishcakes, but made of pork. Signature dish created by Time To Grill!

Tasty and flavourful, but a little too salty for my liking.

Rating: 3.6/5

Overall, the food was tasty and quite to my liking! However, like most mookata stalls, Time To Grill is located in a coffeeshop setting. Well, this has its pros and cons. Pros will be that you get to taste authentic thai food at cheaper prices but the cons would be that the ambience would not be to your liking if you're looking for a quieter dining area and the area might get slightly warm in mid afternoon!
However, if you enjoy casual dining, Time to Grill would be a good place for you to try out!
Good food never fails to make us happy!

I'd always thought that extension is super time consuming but mine was extended by Koji in less than a minute!

This time, I wanted Rilakkuma designs for my nails! Showed Koji several designs that I came across on Instagram and she whipped up my very own Rilakkuma nails!

Reality

Lately I've been thinking quite hard, I know I said that I want to let loose and enjoy myself this holidays, but reality is, there are still commitments to be completed, work to be done and deadlines to be met.

People around me think that being a blogger is easy, and tells me how lucky I am to receive free stuff and there are many people trying to get into this industry, hoping to get more 'free' gifts/services etc. But truth is, there are difficulties in each career and blogging is not just about all these.

Recently, many of my friends are telling me that they don't like my blog as much as before because all I ever blog about nowadays is those official events, reviews, more reviews but very very less of my life stories.
Initially, I thought that was what I wanted because I mean these are the ways that sponsors are looking out for, I mean, by looking at a professional blog would be much better than looking at girl who talks about her usual life hanging around with her friends in the eyes of a sponsor.

I realise these are not what makes me happy and I'm not going to fill my blogs with only 'professional' blog posts anymore. I feel that there probably is no point in doing so.. My main reason for keeping this blog is because I want to keep track of my own life and maybe when I am 60 years old I can read my blog entries for a past time. I'm sure by that time, I wouldn't want to be just reading review, reviews and more reviews only.

Maybe you will find this post easier to read/load compared to my usual posts because I uploaded the photos straight into blogger instead of going to a third party site(photo quality will be higher without taking up my google drive storage space).

And maybe you will find this blog post harder to read because the photos are not aligned at all because I have no idea how to align the photos if I do not upload them from a third party web.

But okay, less of my nagging. :p
I have this sudden strong urge to blog about my weekends because I really had an enjoyable weekend :)

I met up with Amanda for a movie on friday.. she was my best friend during my year in PHS. We sticked together in everything we did. From having recess to slacking at a nearby cheese fries shop. Really enjoyed the times we had together even though it was just for a year. However, I can't say that we put in much effort and over these years of being in different schools, we met up probably only twice.

But I'm happy to say that one of my instagram photo caught amanda's attention and still being a concerned friend, she took the initiative to talk to me <33
I feel bad because I haven't been doing so but I'm really glad that she took the first move to talk to me so that we are able to arrange to meet up on friday and had an enjoyable afternoon catching up on what we missed out these few years.

As for Jonas, its really funny because we're both in SP and our schools are so near each other and I think I only saw him like twice throughout my year 1 in SP coincidentally LOL.
I feel bad again cause I didn't really make any effort and we only met up once for coffee HAHAH ahpek.

And time passed so quickly guess who's bald in army now HAHAHAH.

Then on Saturday, I headed to Jasmine's house to sleepover on saturday. I reached at about 3 plus and we baked some cookies.
Hmm, probably the word baked is used wrongly because all we did was to mix the premixed powder with an egg and some butter and popped them into the oven. I was such a good baker that most of the work was done by Jasmine because I got so addicted into a new drama that I recently started watching HAHAHAH.

Then, we spent the rest of the afternoon and evening watching movies. We wanted to go for a swim initially but ohwell, laziness got the better of us.

As for the next morning, we woke up too late and it was too hot for anything to be done hence we headed shopping at orchard for a short while before I go work.

After work, I was excited because Junyuan, Kwan Wei and I planned to surprise Shunhui at his house. Such a pity Wenyi couldn't join us this year because its too late and she lived too far away:((

This is super weird but Sh actually doesn't like cream. YA IKR cream on a cake.. Why will people not like it:(

Hence, we bought sponge cake for him lol. Anyway, how can a birthday celebration be without presents right:>>

We didn't know what to get for him since he seems to have everything he needs. We went around NTUC and got kinder surprise(for girls version), some drinks and also instant noodle.. I swear all our gifts were practical cause all were in used that night😂😂
Presents for the birthday boy! Yeap, stingray included:>

Then we headed to seven eleven and got a pack of condoms. Yeap these were in use too. How can a celebration not have balloons right hehe!
Wa but these balloons a bit too expensive and cannot even float:(
While we were downstairs preparing to go up

No videos because they can't seem to be uploaded sobs

Since we had nothing to do, 'we' cooked the Korean spicy noodles that everyone's been raving about recently. Ok la actually we didn't cook it. All the work was done by the birthday boy(it's his house after all 😌)

And I'm proud to say I had 9 bites before I started crying:')

pardon my face:( no edits

Then Sh decided to play with his kinder surprise.

God we haven't met up in such a long time that we actually talked through the night because there simply was so much to catch up on. But we were so drained out at 6am hence we had to put an end to our convo and head out for breakfast. Really can't wait for the next meet up alr!

Headed to Plaza Sing with ChiewXuan after cca that day and I'm proud to say that our friendship leveled up and we bought bras together HAHAH.
It was an awesome shopping day because m)phosis had a great sale and I got myself 3 new pairs of shoes.
Talk about being a 败家女 I think I'm the best :)))

I guess that's a short update on my weekend! To be honest, It feels kind of weird to type out what I do over the weekend and my feelings and all because I'm not sure who will be interested in reading these but ohwell I guess what matters most is that I feel happy wriring them.

Thanks for reading, love y'all.

Review: YAM's Kitchen

So happy that the media tasting for Yam's Kitchen was on the last day of my mid-sem test so I had a great celebratory dinner over good food and company!

About Yam's Kitchen:
The restaurant sets foot on its humble beginning doing F&B business in 2011 and had since received numerous good reviews for providing quality food at affordable price.
It allows foodies out there to taste the authentic home cooked Zhi Char cuisine. This flagship outlet is helmed by 38 years old Chef Kelvin Yam with more than 20 years of experience in culinary experience & currently the Treasurer at Huo Yow Cooks Association (Singapore) as well.
Chef Kelvin Yam had achieved gold medals in the Asia competitions in recognition of his excellent cooking skill and creativity in Chinese cuisine.

Awards received by Chef Kelvin Yam:

Gold Medal at the International Youth Chef Competition 2009 in China
(2009 年荣获中国扬州第一界 “国际青年中餐厨师争霸赛”金奖)
Gold Medla at International Chinese Culinary Competition in China Wulumuqi
(2010 年中国乌鲁木齐 “国际中餐名厨邀请赛”金奖 精烹各式中西式菜肴及各式甜点)
Gold Medal at 7th World Championship Chinese Cuisine in 2012
(第七届中国烹饪世界大赛金奖)

I'm feeling so glad to be able to set foot at their second outlet over at Upper Thomson Road.

The ambience of any restaurant is very important as good ambience wraps you up in the entire experience and leaves you feeling warm and special.

I'm sure all of us would love to enjoy our dinner being immersed in a comfortable dining experience and enjoy more than just the food.
Hence, if you're looking for a warm, homely and relaxed experience, Yam's Kitchen will be the right place for you!

One will easily differentiate Yam's Kitchen from the normal zi-char stalls as not only they provide quality food, the restaurant is also beautifully furnished with air-conditioned environment.

VIP rooms are also available at Yam's Kitchen for more exquisite dining!

Salted Egg Fish Skin
I'd always pick out fish skin if they appear in my dishes and I must say this is the first time I'm loving fish skin and keep going back for more!
Using quality salmon skin, there is zero presence of the usual fishy smell that I totally detest in my fish, and the crispy coating of salted egg made this whole dish so delicious. *Licks my lips as I type these*

Smoked Duck Wrapped in Crepe & Fragrant Wine Pork Belly served on a boat
Rating: 2.6/5
Pork Ball with Double Mushroom in Bean Paste Soup

Containing no MSG, this healthy, delightful dish contains huge dollops of juicy pork balls in soya-bean based soup, hence, explaining its unique colour. I quite enjoyed this dish but I would prefer to have less rich tasting soups.

Rating: 2.75/5
Deep Fried Fish Tail with Coconut Sauce
This is a hugely popular dish consisting of a deep fried fish tail along with its sweet and tangy flavourful coconut sauce. All the fish tails used are fresh Red Snapper tails :)

Rating: 4.3/5

3 Treasures Egg with Superior Stock & Daily Vegetables
I've eaten quite a few 3 treasure egg spinach dishes in my life and this is the first time I had such a thick salted egg brewed base and I must compliment that this dish is really worth its price!

I prefer softer vegetables so the spinach was considered slightly tough for me!

Rating: 3.5/5
Prawn in Spicy Milky Sauce accompanied with Fried KangKong

I was really reluctant to try this prawn dish initially because I cannot take certain strong milky taste since young and only drink certain brands of milk. Hence, I felt very skeptical and was afraid to taste as I was afraid that the dish would have the usual unpleasant milky taste.

However, after I took the first bite, I fell in love and had more than one serving of the fresh, juicy prawn. The strong milky smell was covered by the smell of the dash of pepper, leaving behind only the sweet and creamy smell.

This dish is definitely a must go back for!

Rating: 4.6/5
Braised Sea Cucumber with Pig's Trotter

Flavourful dish that is cooked for at least 6 hours.

Rating: 3/5
Tofu with Cai Poh & Meat Floss
My favourite of the night! Love the cai poh and meat floss combination. Friends who know me knows that I will usually order my porridge without caipoh because I do not like its taste but I actually quite liked this one!

Penang Seafood Fried Kway Teow
